Award-winning author, journalist, and environmental activist

In his groundbreaking book Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder (Algonquin, 2005), Richard Louv coined the term “nature-deficit disorder,” to describe the necessity of spending time in nature during childhood. This concept changed the way educators and advocates think about the undeniable but often-overlooked connection between experience in the natural world and the health of children, families, and communities. According to Outside magazine, Louv “helped usher in the nature-as-therapy movement.”

The author of eleven books published in 24 countries, Louv is the cofounder and Chairman Emeritus of the Children & Nature Network. He has traveled around the world giving talks at universities, zoos, schools, and nature-based organizations. Louv has received multiple awards for his work, including the prestigious Audubon Medal, presented by the National Audubon Society in recognition of outstanding achievement in the field of conservation and environmental protection.

His newest book, Noticing: Intimate Encounters with the Natural World, is his most personal yet, about the search for a deeper connection to the natural world during this time of eco-anxiety and upheaval.

Bioenchantment and the Art of Noticing

The perfect accompaniment to Louv’s newest book, Noticing: Intimate Encounters With the Natural World, this eye-opening lecture explores how you can turn a simple nature walk into an amazing journey of discovery and enchantment.

Nature-Deficit Disorder®

Your audience will learn everything they need to know about Louv’s game-changing concept of nature-deficit disorder. This talk will cover what nature-deficit disorder is, the wide-ranging effects of depriving children of sufficient outdoor time, and how to encourage kids to step away from the screens that dominate our lives and love the natural world.

Vitamin N

Vitamin N adopts a more scientific approach to Louv’s usual subject matter. With clarity, urgency, and enthusiasm, he guides audiences through the many studies that explore the link between mental health and nature—and that confirm the power of “Vitamin N,” or spending time out of doors.

The New Nature Movement

In this inspiring talk, Louv discusses how he has spent his career fighting to help children and communities reconnect with nature. He also covers how others can join him in one of the most essential movements of our times.

Applying the Nature Principle

Living in an urban or suburban area doesn’t mean you have to live apart from or out of sync with nature. This talk will help your audience understand how, with the right architecture and city planning, we can bring the natural world into our everyday lives and create a better balance between work and play, progress and nature.

The Human Right to Nature

Louv believes that access to nature shouldn’t be a privilege of the few: it is a basic right, just like clean air and water, that everyone should be able to take advantage of and enjoy. As your audience will learn in The Human Right to Nature, there is a growing international movement that shares this belief and is fighting to make it a reality.

Planet Hope

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed about climate change and other big, frightening topics. With this talk, Louv educates and empowers audiences by highlighting the many reasons to remain hopeful in the face of enormous challenges—and the steps that anyone can take to banish pessimism by improving the world in small ways.
